When you have a big coupon for your restaurant meal, do you calculate the tip based on the pre-coupon bill?
I had a big coupon that made my meal almost half off. But I calculated the tip based on what the bill normally would be. I guess that’s good for the waitress, but did i screw myself?

ALWAYS before coupon or discount. How did you screw yourself if you got half off?

Always calculate tip before coupon and before taxes. You did good.

You didn’t screw yourself, unless you’re into being cheap. I am a waitress and when people don’t tip on the full amount, they do look cheap. It’s unfair to the server not to tip on the full amount of the bill. If you think about it, they did the same amount of work as they’d do for anyone with a check that was as high as yours before the discount, yet you only wanted them to make half because you only had half to pay out. That’s rather unfair to the server. I think that you did the right thing.

You did fine. Always calculate before the discount. It’s only fair to the waitress/waiter. 18-20% mandatory for a good job!! 25% if they REALLY did a good job! Don’t be cheap! They make their living off of their tips!

You did the right thing. The waitress served you a big meal, you paid for a small one, but she should still get the tip for the big one.

Yes because the server shouldn’t miss out just because you have a coupon. They still did their job.

No. You still got a good deal which I would estimate to be at least a third off.

You did the right thing! The server didn’t do any less work.. so they shouldn’t receive less of a tip. Actually, they did up end doing more because they had to apply the coupon.

Yes, you tipped well. You should be tipping on what the bill is before coupons/discounts. At the end of the night if the server has to give a portion of their tips to kitchen/support staff, this number is based on sales, including the amount that was discounted, regardless of how much of an actual tip they received (Just a little fun fact). Good job.
