Is it in bad taste to use a coupon at a restaurant with a group?

So I am going to a group dinner tomorrow with some of my club officers at my college. I have this coupon for "buy one entree, get a second free" for the restaurant we are going to. I was wondering if it would be weird if I brought it and used it? I’m thinking it might get awkward if I ask one out of several people to share the coupon with me.

Suggestions? I am a college student on a tight budget.

Thats a good question. If its informal- like, if you’re going with other college friends, then I don’t think it would be inappropriate. But if you’re wearing suits, then find the person you want to split the coupon with, and tell the waiter that you want a separate check.
Once the waiter gives you the seperate check, then put your coupon in it. No biggie!

I have definitely been in that situation before. I think you should bring it with you in case and see what your instincts tell you when you get there. When I go out with people, I bring it and just sit down for a few minutes, see where the dinner is heading, if it feels appropriate. There are times when I do use my coupon and it’s no big deal and I play it off. Other times, it just doesn’t feel right, don’t do it if it doesn’t feel right because your feelings will show and only make everything more awkward. Go with your gut.

And always ask yourself the question, is it worth it?

Well if you like saving money then use it. It’s against the social norm,I guess, but still. They won’t think any less of you, because all college kids are on a tight budget.

Not at all. I believe that the only time using a coupon is in bad taste is on a first date.

What a dilemma! I think it really depends on the people you are with. If it is fairly informal and you know the people well, then I am sure that they will understand! Will you pay for everything individually or split the bill? If you split the bill then everyone is a winner as everyone will pay less! If you pay individually then it does look pretty tight for you to produce a coupon just for you and one other person.
    I hope this helps!

It’s definitely not in bad taste, especially if you’re a college student, and considering the economy these days… If I went out to dinner with you and you asked if I wanted to share a coupon I would definitely be up for it.
